New Haven artist Raheem Nelson's iPad is his canvas, and the city his inspiration: The School of Visual Arts grad, who majored in cartooning, has been drawing since he was in second grade. As a Wilbur Cross High School student, he studied at ACES-ECA, which he calls the place where “my formal art education began.” Part of the New York portion of his work reflects sights he saw as a regular commuter into the Big Apple for art school — a MetroNorth train, a Harlem skyline, Radio City Music Hall — “important to me because it’s where I graduated in 2007,” says the New Havener.

Creating an abundance of jobs may be the key to restoring economic prosperity, but some argue it’s how people feel in their jobs that will drive success. For the second year, employees from across Fairfield, Litchfield and New Haven counties have spoken - singling out 35 companies that have raised the bar for the exemplary treatment of staffers. Hearst Connecticut Newspapers’ partner, Workplace Dynamics, collected feedback from over 14,000 employees at 62 companies about the work they do.
