• "Rocky" Helps ACES Village School Celebrate Baseball Day

    "Rocky" the mascot for the New Britain Rock Cats was on hand to help celebrate Baseball Day at ACES Village School in North Haven.

    More than 140 students and staff participated in the event that celebrated a month-long study of baseball.

    Rocky, along with ACES Village School Music Therapist Jaime Plancon, lead the students, staff and parents in a rousing sing-a-long of “Take Me Out to the Ball Game” while PTO moms provided popcorn and drinks for the 7th inning stretch.

    ACES Announces Carmella Rossomando-Heise as its 2014 Teacher of the Year! A Hamden resident, Ms. Rossomando-Heise is a music teacher at ACES Wintergreen Interdistrict Magnet School (WIMS) in Hamden. She began her career at ACES in 2002.

    CHESHIRE >> Cristina Chang-Bryant always wanted to open her own restaurant.

    After a career as executive chef and culinary events coordinator for Hadco, a high end appliance distributor, she did, Sweetpea is a gourmet take-out place in Cheshire, the business Chang-Bryant, of Rocky Hill, always wanted to own.But fate dealt her cruel blow. She put in her notice at Hadco October 1, and the next day she discovered she had cancer.

    Yet, even with stage 4 cancer, she kept on, giving up the security of a corporate job to pursue her dream.

    ”When I’m on my death bed, what would I have regretted?” Chang-Bryant said. “My one regret would have been not having my own business.”

    Once it was up and running, Sweetpea catered an event at Wintergreen Interdistrict Magnet School in Hamden, catching the eye, and taste buds, of Ingrid Ellinger-Doviak, head of Wintergreen’s enrichment program.

    HAMDEN >> Mother, musician, band member, and now teacher of the year.
    Carmella Rossomando-Heise, 34, was awarded the Area Cooperative Education Services (ACES) 2014 Teacher of the Year at a ceremony held June 12 at ACES Whitney High School North.

    Since 2002, Rossomando-Heise worked as a music teacher at the Wintergreen Interdistrict Magnet School (WIMS), an ACES elementary and middle school that specializes in the arts, humanities and technology education. When Rossomando-Heise learned she received the award she cried.

    “I was definitely overwhelmed,” Rossomando-Heise said. “I guess you feel really good because you know you’re being recognized for something so incredible, and I felt that way when I was nominated, but then to be selected for the actual teacher of the year award was amazing.”

    Quinnipiac University and ACES Mill Road School celebrated a sixth year of collaboration with a reading and health fair on April 26 at the North Haven K-8 school. Fifty-eight physician assistant students in Quinnipiac’s School of Health Sciences have spent the academic year working with the school students to improve literacy, fitness and nutritional awareness.Each of the school’s approximately 175 students received a new book, toothpaste, deodorant, a tooth brush and healthy snacks while competing in fitness and related trivia challenges at the fair.
