WIMS 6th Graders visit Lincoln Center and the U.N.
01/19/2017
On Wednesday, January 18, 2017 the Sixth grade class of Wintergreen made their annual trip to New York City. Led by the sixth grade team of Mary Ellen Rourke, Mary Connolly, Tatiana Duncan and music teacher Kathryn Morse the students had the amazing opportunity to attend the New York Philharmonic and hear Antonin Dvorak's NEW WORLD SYMPHONY at Lincoln Center. In preparation for the concert students studied what inspired Dvorak to create music for this new world called America. This included the music of Native Americans and African American Spirituals, and some popular literature of the day, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow's SONG OF HIAWATHA.
After the concert the students traveled across town to tour the United Nations where they Visited the newly renovated General Assembly Hall, the Security Council Chamber, the Trusteeship Council Chamber, and the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) Chamber in the renovated Conference Building. They also learned how the United Nations addresses issues such as disarmament, peace and security, human rights, and the Millennium Development Goals.

Kindness Counts at Mill Road School
01/6/2017
In 2015 Mill Road School became involved with the Community Plates program as part of our Kindness Counts initiative. Community Plates is the simple solution to ending local hunger. The program delivers healthy food from businesses that have too much to people who have too little. The students and staff at Mill Road have the opportunity to participate in this program on a weekly basis. Each week one class rescues food from Trader Joe's. The class then takes the food to a local shelter, soup kitchen, or Head Start program in need.
