ACES in North Haven is launching a new summer school program that will let students use the summer to do anything from jump ahead to graduate early or satisfy prerequisites, focus on requirements for their majors, or just enjoy smaller classes. The program is already gaining the interest of families in North Haven to Branford and Milford.

The ACES Summer Academy program is a blended learning model that pairs a teacher with an online learning system. A range of classes will be offered Monday to Thursday, July 6 to 30, from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m.

The ACES program is currently being piloted at ACES Whitney High School North with great success. ACES Executive Director Dr. Thomas M. Danehy said the program has so far been successful, due in part to the flexibility of the combination of online tools and traditional teaching.

Through the program, which uses the Edgenuity online system, ACES supplies the teachers who work with the students, Danehy said. At the start of the program, students take a pre-test to determine what concepts the students doesn’t understand and needs to study, so the teacher can focus on those points rather than the student sitting through the whole class again.

“For example, in algebra, if the pre-test shows the students has issues with variables, the computer program would teach that to the student and give examples for the student to work through, until that concept is mastered by the student,” Danehy said.

Connecticut certified teachers will facilitate the classes using the Edgenuity software while ACES Technology Services division will offer technical support for students.
