The Science-based Approaches to Independence and Life Skills (SAILS) program is based in the science of applied behavior analysis (ABA) and was established in 2010 for students aged 11 – 22 presenting with autism or other developmental disorders that require intensive academic, behavioral, and life skills instruction.

The goal of the SAILS program is to deliver high quality instruction primarily centered on the development of  the functional life skills needed for students to live meaningful and fulfilling adult lives in an inclusive society.  Skills are taught in the community and contrived naturalistic settings within the building, such as a kitchen, family room, bedroom, and grocery store, to promote generalized and functional outcomes. Evidence-based practices are utilized in modifying maladaptive and interfering behaviors while teaching effective and efficient alternative responses.

The SAILS program features small classes (maximum of 10 students per class) that are co-lead by a CT state-certified Special Education Teacher and a Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) with support from professionals in related services, including speech, occupational, and physical therapies creating a transdisciplinary approach to educating the whole student.

ACES SAILS offers a 190-day school year and a summer session in July with breaks typically no longer than 2 weeks to support students’ need for consistency and routine.
